The controversy surrounding the naming of the Fatorda road after former chief minister Manohar Parrikar took a new twist on Saturday after citizens under the banner of Goencho Avaaz named the road after Padmashree Bakibab Borkar and Father of Opinion Poll Jack Sequeira.

A group of citizens led by Goencho Avaaz Convenor Capt Viriato Fernandes and Dr Francisco Colaco marched from the Ravindra Bhavan, Margao to the site and unveiled the road after Bakibab Borkar and Jack Sequeira.

After the road was named after the two great personalities, Capt Viriato said the people of Fatorda have disapproved the divisive politics of the local MLA Vijai Sardesai. “By naming the Fatorda road after Bakibab Borkar and Jack Sequeira, people have said a firm not to U-turn politics. “We know that Bakibab Borkar was a Padmashree and a great poet and took Goa to international stage. We have no problem if the government names the roads after these great personalities, but we don’t want divisive politics, wherein people are divided on religious and caste lines. We want people to be brought together”, he said, while thanking the people of Fatorda for giving a pleasant surprise by

naming the road after the two great sons of Goa.

In his brief address, Dr Colaco said Fatordekars feel proud that the Fatorda road has been named after Jack Sequeira and Bakibab Borkar. “Jack Sequeira had truly protected Goemkarponn. He had saved Goa, otherwise we would have been a small part of Maharashtra. We are proud that Jack Sequeira had lived amongst us an did so much for the people”, Dr Colaco added.

Social activist Jose Marie Miranda termed as “good” decision to name the Fatorda road after Bakibab Borkar and Jack Sequeira. “It is a good decision and we are all happy. We fail to understand why the government and the municipalities name the roads after great personalities”, he added.

Tiatrist Tausif de Navelim, Mahesh Nayak and others welcomed the decision to name the road after Bakibab Borkar and Jack Sequeira, issuing a warning to the Fatorda MLA that his time is up and that people will vote him out in the next election.
