A new species of primite wasp from the genus Kudakrumia has been described from Goa by Indian scientists have named it “Kudakrumia Rangnekari” in honour of a well-known butterfly and dragonfly specialist from Goa Parag Rangnekar.
Rangnekar had helped Girish Kumar, one of the authors of the scientific paper which describes the species, to conduct a collection tour in Goa during which the holotype was collected.
“I have absolutely no idea how to react to this. I remember having seen species being named after friends and feeling happy about it. I have personally contemplated naming species after mentors and field workers. But a species being named after me comes as a complete surprise,” Rangnekar said reacting to the news that the wasp species was named after him.
Rangnekar also said he had “mixed feelings” of joy and for some unknown reason, a slight feeling of being uncomfortable.
In India, the wasp is found in Goa and Kerala and outside the country it is also found in neighbouring Sri Lanka.
The new species of wasp was collected mainly from Cotigao, according to Rangnekar.
The types of the new species and specimens of known species are deposited in the ‘National Zoological Collections’ of the Western Ghat Regional Centre of Zoological Survey of India located at Kozhikode.
