National Fishworkers Forum (NFF) and General Secretary of Goenchea Raponkarncho Ekvott (GRE) Olencio Simoes represented India at the World Social Forum (WSF) at Johannesburg, South Africa.
As many as 400 trade unions and NGOs from about 90 countries attended the three-day WSF meet at South Africa.
Simoes deliberated at the WSF on the ill-effects of India’s Sagarmala programme saying that the project would displace 10 crore people who have been dependent on natural resources for their livelihood for several centuries.
“The mega development is only to safeguard private players by saving their transportation cost, for which the government plans to destroy ecology,” stated Simoes.
Simoes said it was decided that the trade unions and NGOs would stage events in their respected countries to mark World Fisheries Day on November 21.
