The NGO ‘Goa First’ has decided to write to Urban Development Minister Milind Naik and the Directorate of Municipal Administration (DMA) requesting them not to grant any funds to the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) to celebrate its centenary celebrations.
The MMC has plans to celebrate the centenary year by having an eight-day programme to mark 100 years of Camara De Mormugao, which was established in 1919. The centenary celebrations will be held from February 9 to February 15.
Speaking to the media, ‘Goa First’ Convenor and social activist Parshuram Sonurlekar said spending money on centenary celebrations was utter misuse of honest tax payers money. “If the MMC wishes to celebrate the centenary year, it can use this funds granted to waive off residential house taxes, garbage collection fee for one year, beautification of Vasco city, upgradation of the Sada garbage treatment plant and many issues pertaining to Mormugao municipality,” said Sonurlekar.
