NGT panel chief directs MMC to take up waste segregation

MARGAO

The Chairperson of the Regional Monitoring Committee for effective implementation of SWM rules for Western Zone Justice J P Deodhar constituted by the National Green Tribunal descended on the Sonsodo waste dumping site on Friday and is believed to have called upon the Margao Municipal Council to take up waste segregation at source and door-to-door waste collection in all the municipal wards.

Accompanied by the Director of Municipal Administration, R Maneka, IAS, Justice Deodhar later visited the Cuncolim waste dumping site to gain first-hand information about the waste collection and disposal in the Cuncolim municipal jurisdiction. The visit by Justice Deodhar comes against the backdrop of his visit to the Saligao waste treatment plant on Thursday, informed DMA Maneka.

At Sonsodo, Justice Deodhar, a retired Judge of the Bombay High Court, told

the Margao Municipal Council officials led by the municipal engineer Arsekar to effectively undertake waste segregation at source. He issued the direction after the MMC informed the committee that the civic body has undertaken waste collection at source in

seven out of the 25 municipal wards.

The direction to go for waste collection at source in all the 25 municipal wards assumes significance and comes against the backdrop of the dilly dallying by the Margao civic body to outsources door-to-door waste collection for more than half a decade now.

The regional committee also gathered information on the functioning of the waste treatment plant and other issues connecting to the Sosnodo plant.

The role of the regional monitoring committee is to ensure effective implementation of SWM rules 2016 and ensure separate treatment mechanism for bio-medical waste is in place and in accordance with SWM rules 2016 iii.

The committee is also required to examine the reports submitted by State-level committees every month and to submit the report of the workings of the Regional Committee to the Apex Committee twice in a quarter, and to the Tribunal for the first three initial months of working.
