As widely expected, senior Congress leader Ramakant Khalap’s son, Nikhilchandra Khalap, has been elected unopposed as the chairman of the Bardez Bazaar Consumer Cooperative Society, which operates supermarkets in Mapusa and other parts of Goa.
Eknath Nagvenkar was similarly elected unopposed as the vice-chairman of the cooperative. With only one nomination filed for each post, the election was declared uncontested.
The outcome was on anticipated lines, following the committee elections held on October 5, where the entire Khalap-backed panel had swept all positions.
Khalap had pledged to streamline the functioning of Bardez Bazaar and to revive the cooperative’s long-dormant pharmacy operations.
He also expressed determination to push forward the long-pending mall project, which has remained stalled despite having received land clearances.
