MARGAO

Seven-time Margao MLA Digambar Kamat, who has presided over the affairs of the constituency for the last 28 years, has said the beautification and infrastructure works initiated by the Margao Municipal Council and the government would help make Margao the model town in the state.

After launching beautification work to the tune of Rs 21 lakh in ward No 21 of the Margao civic body in the presence of MMC Chairperson Damu Shirodkar, Councilors and ward citizens, Kamat said development grants will no longer be utilized to construct gutters and drains, but will be utilized to beautify the city.

“This is just the beginning. My concept of beautifying the city has started. I have taken up two projects in the city near the Gomant Vidya Niketan and Silver gate. This is the third beautification project in the city”, he said.

He added, "The proposed six-lane Rawanfond bridge estimated to cost around Rs 64 crore will start soon. Besides, work on the beautification of the Rawanfond-Khareband road stretch and the Rawanfond-Apollo Hospital stretch will be taken up in phase-II”.

Kamat said he has requested architect Avinash Borkar to lend his services in helping the civic body to come out with designs and plans to take the beautification work forward.

Margao Municipal Chairperson, Damu Shirodkar, who represents Ward no 21 in the Civic body, thanked the Margao MLA for the innovative concept of taking up the beautification concept in the city.

He said the Rs 21 lakh beautification project entails beautifying the stretch of the road from St Joseph school junction to the Electricity junction, with stainless steel railings, pavers on the footpath, besides illumination. "When the MMC received development grants, our MLA made it clear that the funds should not be spent on gutters and drains, but on works, which can be seen and which adds aesthetics to the city”, he said.
