Attribute it to the disruption in the import of fish from across the border or otherwise, fish was not available in abundance at the wholesale
fish market on Sunday, even as reports spoke about fish being sold at a premium in
the markets.
The Sunday holiday customers making a beeline to the wholesale fish market and the Margao retail fish market virtually returned home disappointed with the prized variety of fish such as the lady fish and shrimps being offered for sale at a premium.
Normal or big-size mackerels were nowhere to be seen at the wholesale and retail fish markets. Baby mackerels and sardines, besides sole fish (local name, leppos) supplied from local sources were the most sought-after fish in the wholesale and retail fish market on Sunday.
By 11 in the morning, the wholesale fish market virtually wore a deserted look, with only a handful of vendors seen around. People, who were anxiously waiting for the arrival of fish netted by ramponkars, had to return home disappointed.
The situation was no better at the SGPDA retail market. People, who could not find any fish at the wholesale fish market, headed to the retail market, only to find the situation not much different.
Shrimps and sole fish were being sold at a premium and the vendors attributed the steep rate to the situation at the wholesale fish market.
President of the Margao retail fish vendors association Felix Dias said that shrimps and sole fish were sold at a premium in the wholesale fish market on Sunday, leaving them with no option but to sell the fish at a premium.
He further said that fish, whether local or imported, was not available in abundance in the wholesale fish market, adding “this may be another cause of fish being sold at a higher rate”.
