Though Khaunte has managed to reach out to the Porvorcars in the last five years, retaining the constituency would be an
uphill task for him, as he is once again set to contest as an independent.
The Goan spoke to a few people in Porvorim to understand the pulse of the Constituency. It was learnt that both BJP and Khaunte is moving ahead with their campaign in full swing.
“Khaunte has been vocal about peoples’ problems and tried his bit to solve it. But how much can you do as an independent candidate?
One needs to have the party tag for carrying out the bigger works in the constituency”, said a prominent businessman further stating, “But looking at the chaos by political parties, it was a smart move by him.”
People however felt that Pawaskar too, a first-time candidate fielded by
BJP, will be able to serve the constituency better as the BJP is ruling the State during the last term.
“During the last election, BJP candidate Parvatkar lost by a very small margin, even though he was a last-minute candidate.
This clearly shows their organisational setup is strong,” said a husband-wife duo residing in Porvorim for the last 30 years.
Apart from these two major contenders, there are others in the fray including Aam Aadmi Party Candidate Rajesh Volvoikar, Independent Candidate Wilbur Ticlo and MG Party Candidate Rajesh Amonkar.
Nonetheless, when asked about the issues plaguing the constituency, many were of vocal about water scarcity.
“Sometimes, we have water released even after two days. How are we to survive in such condition if we do not get the basic amenities?” questioned a working woman.
Stating that Porvorim has been growing at a very fast pace, a local resident said,
“If this continues for other 10 years,
Porvorim will face a major scarcity of water. Now itself sometimes we get water supplied through tankers.
Another youth lamented about public transport in certain remote areas at regular intervals.
Additionally, he also spike about shortage of playgrounds in the constituency.
