No change of guard in MMC before LS polls as Damu completes 15 months

Margao MLA says civic body chief will continue in chair

No change of guard in MMC before LS polls as Damu completes 15 months

MARGAO
As the Margao civic chief Damu Shirodkar completed 15 months in office on Friday, it’s now apparent that the BJP leadership is not inclined to effect a change in leadership in the Margao Municipal Council before the ensuing Lok Sabha polls.

In fact, even as all eyes were focused on the BJP leadership how the party would go about in the Margao Municipal Council, with Chairperson Damu Shirodkar completing 15 months in office on Friday, Congress-turned-Margao MLA Digambar Kamat put an end to the speculations over the change in chairperson of the Margao civic body.

In fact, Kamat told The Goan that the party would not effect any changes in the Margao Municipal Council with the Lok sabha elections round the corner, sending clear signals to the ruling party councillors as well as the opposition that the Margao civic chief Damu Shirodkar and his deputy Deepali Sawal would stay put in office at least till the Lok Sabha elections.

“We have not taken any decision on the question of effecting changes in the Margao Municipality. The Lok Sabha elections are fast approaching and I do not think any changes will come in the civic body before the ensuing elections,” Kamat told The Goan.

Kamat’s stand is a clear indication that the MMC chief, who has completed 15 months in office on Friday, will continue in office at least till the Lok Sabha polls, indicating there will not be a change in the leadership in the MMC in the coming 2-4 months.

While the MMC chairperson has completed 15 months in office on Friday, Vice-Chairperson Deepali Sawal has been presiding over the seat since 2021. Even though Deepali was believed to have had submitted her resignation letter to the Margao MLA around 15 months ago, Kamat has not forwarded Deepali’s resignation to the office of the Director of Municipal Administration till date.
