Penha de Franca Sarpanch Safar Fadte had to pay the price for taking strong and quick action against controversial constructions in the village.

The sarpanch’s colleague, Radhika Sawant, jumped ship and joined forces with the opposition group of five to move a no-trust motion against her.

Six panchas led by Radhika Sawant and five members of the opposition group Umesh Fadte, Rajesh Volvoiker, Visranti Dessi, Subhash Kalangutker and Ganashyam Naik served a notice of no confidence against Sarpanch Fadte and Deputy Sarpanch Swapnil Chodanker.

The move comes at a time when the sarpanch had issued notices against illegal constructions and kiosks and also fixed inspection of the sites in the panchayat area.

Ironically, the no-trust motion moved by the group of six accused the sarpanch and her deputy of encouraging illegal constructions.

Sarpanch Fadte told The Goan that certain people did not like her taking tough action on illegal constructions and therefore decided to destabilize the panchayat.

“I am surprised the no-trust motion blames us for encouraging illegalities. In fact all illegalities were going on during the term of Radhika Sawant when she was the sarpanch,” Fadte alleged.

“I kept my promise in the last Gram Sabha to take action against illegalities and accordingly issued notices to many illegal constructions,” she added.
