Speaking at a function, Parrikar said, “As far as education is concerned, we will improve the quality. Additionally, we will have to carry out training and upgradation of teachers. Presently, Goa has 23 students per teachers which is better than the international norms which state that there should be one for every 25 students. Goa has enough schools. If more schools are opened, this student-teacher ratio will go down.”
Sources at the Directorate of Education (DoE) had stated that it may not grant permissions to open any new primary schools during academic year 2017-18 onwards, owing to the adequate number of schools running across the State. The DOE had received nearly 40 applications to open new primary schools in the State, of which seven applications to open schools in English medium were already rejected due to cap on English medium primary schools.
As per statistics released by the DoE for 2016-17, there are 1190 primary schools in the State of which 800 are government-run, while 390 others are government-aided and unaided schools.
As regards government primary schools, 725 are Marathi-medium, 22 Konkani-medium, three each in Kannada and Urdu medium and one in Hindi medium. Of the 390 government-aided and unaided, 240 are English-medium, 92 are Marathi medium, 40 Konkani medium, six Urdu, one Hindi and six in English/Marathi.
