“We need to stop using plastic bags. From July onwards, if any person is found buying or selling plastic bags, heavy fines would be imposed, which could even go to the extent of ` 5,000,” said Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar.
Urging the citizens to use cloth bags instead of plastic bags, he said that the State government will carry out strict implementation to ban use of plastics in the State.
“In many cases, we forget that while making the government accountable, we also have to perform certain duties. If a citizen performs his duties, the government will also be able to perform better. It is we who are responsible for making cities dirty,” he said.
“We clean the highways. But after cleaning, we realised that the same place is being dirtied again. Now, we have established a garbage collection work station in that place, and in days to come more work stations will be set up,” he said, while advising citizens not to litter garbage and instead hand over the waste at the transfer station.
“Citizens should make efforts to segregate the garbage instead of throwing it on the road,” he added.
Meanwhile, as part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’, the State Bhartiya Janata Yuva Morcha has decided to carry out cleanliness drives across all constituencies in the State, every month.
“From June onwards, on second Sunday of every month, teams of BJYM will carry out cleanliness drives across all 40 constituencies,” said BJYM State president, Sharmad Raiturcar.
