MARGAO
The Margao Municipal Council has set May 15 as the deadline for road cutting in the commercial capital, with the civic body deciding to send a strongly worded letter to the PWD, Sewerage, to restore all the roads which were dug for laying underground lines.
At a meeting with representatives of various agencies, a visibly agitated Margao Municipal Council Chairperson Babita Prabhudesai told Chief Officer Johnson Fernandes to dash off a letter to the sewerage department to stop road cutting activity by May 15 and restore all damaged roads or face action.
Councilors also complained to the Chairperson that roads excavated for laying of the lines have not been restored in some places till date.
The Chairperson made a particular mention of the road, which was hot mixed by the PWD, only to be dug up by the sewerage department, and abandoned the same without restoring.
“We can understand that you had dug up the road in an emergency, but leaving the road without restoration cannot be tolerated,” she said, while making clear to representatives of the PWD, Sewerage, BSNL and Water Resources Department that no road digging will be permitted in the city after May 15. She warned that the municipality will seize material used in the road digging activity.
The Margao municipality also submitted a list of storm water nullahs with a plea to take them up for desilting before the onset of
monsoon. The Chairperson said the WRD has accepted the request of the municipality.
The meeting took stock of the underground cables belonging to the power department and BSNL along the old market circle-KTC road which will be soon be taken up for construction of the water nullah.
It has been decided to write to BSNL as well as the power department to take care of their cables and submit a map of the underground cable network to prevent any damage.
