The State government backtracked and decided to scrap its earlier decision to permit the controversial Electronic Dance Music (EDM) festival this year due to the Covid-19 pandemic situation.
Deputy Chief Minister Manohar Ajgaonkar said, the event will not be held this year due to public pressure.
“We will not permit Sunburn this year as people don't want it," Ajgaonkar who holds the tourism portfolio said, adding that the permission already granted was an" in-principle permission,” and not final.
Sunburn's franchise owners had already announced earlier this week that it would hold the event, which attracts thousands from across the world, from December 27-29 triggering widespred concerns that it would be a super spreader event of the dreaded coronavirus.
The decision to cancel the event was taken in the interes and wellbeing of Goans and tourists amidst the Covid-19 sitaution, he said, adding holding Sunburn Festival next year will be considered.
