Cortalim MLA Alina Saldanha along with the Sarpanch of Cansaulim Martha Saldanha and representatives of Velsao have expressed serious concern over the consequences the doubling of track will have on the common man of these villages and their heritage and residential houses.
Senior Railway officials, however, are believed to have told the MLA and the sarpanchas that the question of land acquisition and track doubling will arise only if the Goa government accepts the railway's proposal for acquisition of land at Cansaulim, Velsao and other places.
South Goa MP Narendra Sawaikar also told the Cortalim MLA as well as the sarpanchas that the railways have for the moment decided to double track the South Western Railway only up to Margao, adding that the government will take a call on the project from Margao-Vasco at a later date.
Alina, however, told The Goan later on Tuesday evening that the railway officials have promised her and the local elected representatives that track doubling will not take place along the stretch from Cansaulim, Velsao and Sancoale in her Cortalim constituency.
"This is good news we have received an assurance at today's meeting called by the South Goa MP Narendra Sawaikar with railway officials," she said.
Earlier, Alina raised serious concern over the proposed track doubling passing through the villages of Cansaulim, Velsao and Sancoale in her Cortalim constituency, saying the proposed plan will destroy houses and compound walls of the common man living along the stretch.
Meanwhile, South Goa MP said today's meeting with members of the village panchayats of Kalay, Chandor, Guirdolim, Sao Jose de Areal, Cansaulim, Velsao, Curchorem-Cacora Municipal Council, deputy collectors, SWR and Konkan railway officials discussed, coordinated and resolved railway related issues. He said issues concerning ROB/RUB, land acquisition, doubling form Collem to Margao, footbridges etc were discussed.
Sawaikar said it was decided to hold joint inspection in October for ROB/RUB at Chandor-Gurdolim with rail officials and panchayat.
