Hopes to get the Sanjeevani Sahakar Sakhar Karkhana at Dharbandora to begin the sugarcane crushing season by the weekend received a major boost, when the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) revoked its order and granted permission to the Karkhana to begin the crushing season.
The CPCB granted its permission only after the Karkhana installed the required systems.
Speaking to The Goan, Registrar of Cooperative Societies Sanjiv Gadkar confirmed that the CPCB has granted its permission. “The Sanjeevani Sahakar Sakhar Karkhana has the permission to crush sugarcane,’’ said Gadkar.
‘Us Utpadak Sanghatana’ President Rajendra Jivaji Desai told The Goan that machinery at the Kharkhana would be put on trial on Thursday.
“Once the trials are over, we should start the crushing season by Saturday. South Goa MP Narendra Sawaikar conveyed to me over phone that CPCB had granted permission by revoking its earlier notice. We are really happy that the Karkhana will start the crushing season,” said Desai.
Around 2,500 tonnes of sugarcane reached the Karkhana by Wednesday evening.
The CPCB had issued a closure order to the Karkhana for failing to install online continuous monitoring station for effluent and stack emissions.
Since November 26, sugarcane famers had been demanding the start of the crushing season at the earliest.
Acting on CPCB’s requirements, Karkhana installed the required monitoring system.
