Leader of the Opposition Yuri Alemao has raised a significant concern regarding the treatment of the Konkani language by nationalised banks, including branches of the State Bank of India. Speaking in the House, Alemao accused these institutions of sidelining Konkani, despite it being recognised in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution. Alemao reported that when customers request service in Konkani, bank officials often claim they are instructed not to use the language. Instead, they default to Hindi, English, or Marathi, which he argues undermines the importance of Konkani as a regional language. Chief Minister Pramod Sawant assured the House that he will address the issue with the Regional Head of the Reserve Bank of India.
