North Goa breathes easy for now, Sunday’s power cut postponed

The electricity department has decided to postpone the planned power shutdown in entire North Goa, proposed on May 14 between 7 am and 2 pm, to a later date.

MAPUSA

Major feasts at several places on Sunday forced the department to postpone the proposed shutdown.
Mapusa Electricity Executive Engineer C H Rajgopalan said the proposed shutdown on Sunday has been postponed and a new date would be informed later.
“Earlier, we had planned to carry out a major shutdown in entire North Goa but since there were feasts at many places on May 14, we decided to postpone the shutdown,” Rajgopalan said and added ‘We will, however, carry out specific power shutdowns in some areas for maintenance’.
Sources said the proposal to have the major shutdown came from the Tivim sub-station and at a very short notice.
“Whenever we need to carry out a major shutdown, we need to take an approval from the government. In this case, it wasn’t possible to get the approval at such a short notice,” a source in the department said.
The department is expected to hold the shutdown probably in the next week, which will be announced later.
What started as a message to alert friends and neighbours about the power department’s decision to hold a major power shutdown on May 14 soon went viral on WhatsApp.
Mindful that such messages about the proposed power shutdown would cause further confusion among the public, the department issued a statement on Thursday notifying the decision to postpone the proposed shutdown in North Goa.
