Not coerced to participate in stir, says one of oldest participant

OLD GOA

One of the oldest participants of the Old Goa fast satyagraha Florinda Tavares has stated that she is participating in the satyagraha out of her own will and that she has not been coerced by anyone.

Tavares made the statement when The Goan questioned her over the claims being made that the women are used to prolong the satyagraha.

Incidentally, the satyagraha completed 93 days on Thursday and in another week’s time it will complete 100 days.

“I am participating in the satyagraha out of my own will and nobody has coerced or forced me to participate. It is my love for Old Goa that I am participating in the satyagraha,” Tavares said and added that she just wants that the structure should be demolished.

When questioned whether she had complained about maltreatment to anybody, Tavares replied in the negative. “I never complained to anybody about anything,” she added.

The other women too concurred with Tavares and said that participating in the satyagraha is their decision and not influenced by anyone.

Meanwhile, Save Old Goa Action Committee president Fatima Pereira refused to comment on the allegations being made that she is a dummy president.

“Let anybody say whatever they want. I do not want to be dragged into the controversy,” Pereira added while stating such issues should not shift their focus which is to get the structure demolished.
