Adv Satish Sonak had in a complaint filed to the GHRC said policy guidelines should be put in place so that no single parent should be compelled to do election duty and should be exempted from it.
In his complaint, Sonak said “if there is a couple in service both the spouses are never given simultaneously election duties. Instead only one of the spouse is requisitioned for election duty. The purpose of this practice is to prevent sufferings that may be caused to the family including the children due to deployment of both parents in election duties,” he said.
With both CS and CEO as respondents, Sonak has said they had failed to evolve a general practice that whenever there is a single woman parent, she should not be requisitioned for poll duties.
“The non granting of such exemption from election duties is causing great hardship and suffering and tension to the single women parents who are as a consequence of election duty unable to look at their families. This amounts to violation of their human rights to be able to take personal care of their family including children,” said Sonak in the complaint. GHRC under Chairperson A D Salkar has issued the notices returnable on January 18.
