Rival BJP-backed panels are set to clash yet again in the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) on June 13, at a special meeting convened to discuss the no-confidence motion moved against MMC Chairperson Kritesh Gaonkar.
MMC Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes on Thursday informed that a special meeting on the no-confidence motion moved against MMC Chairperson Kritesh Gaonkar has been fixed on June 13.
Fernandes also informed that the presiding officer for the special meeting will the Margao Municipal Council Chief Officer Siddhivinayak Naik.
It may be recalled that 13 MMC councillors of the opposition panel led by MMC Councillor Nandadeep Raut had moved a no-confidence motion against Gaonkar on Monday evening.
This is the second no-confidence motion moved against Gaonkar by the opposition panel, the earlier one being moved against him on April 25. A meeting to discuss that no-confidence motion had led to commotion, suspense and drama after one councillor had used a pen to cast his ballot.
Though the presiding officer had declared Gaonkar voted out of power by 12-0 votes after considering the vote cast with a pen
as invalid.
Gaonkar subsequently filed a revision petition challenging his ouster with the Urban Development Minister Milind Naik, insisting that his ouster required a minimum of 13 votes in the 25-member council.
The order of the presiding officer was later set aside by the urban development minister on May 27 and Gaonkar was reinstated as MMC chairperson.
The latest political twist is seen as a power struggle between both panels backed by the BJP.
