Even as the two-day Assembly session got off to start on Tuesday, Congress’ dilemma over the leader of Opposition came to fore with the party struggling to find a leader that could lead the flock in the Assembly.
All 11 elected members of the Congress that met at the Assembly complex to choose the CLP leader in the afternoon failed to arrive at a consensus. The CLP finally decided to authorise Sonia Gandhi to do the needful.
The resolution passed at the meeting stated that Congress President Sonia Gandhi should decide the leader of the Congress Legislature Party. Congress is the biggest Opposition party with 11 elected members.
Speaking after the CLP meeting, Margao Congress MLA and strong contender for the leader of Opposition post Digambar Kamat said, "No name has been shortlisted… once the power to take a decision is given to Sonia Gandhi there is no question of shortlisting anyone”.
Asked what was holding the Congress back in electing the CLP leader Kamat said, absence of a central observer was also one of the reasons for the delay.
"After Congress defeat, everybody went back to Delhi and there is no observer here in Goa", he said.
Kamat, however, said that his trip to Delhi was just a courtesy visit. "My visit to Delhi was just thank the High Command for the help in elections", said Kamat.
