Marriage certificates will now be available at the click of a button as the government commissioned an online portal for issuing digitalised marriage records from 1914 to 1970.

Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Tuesday launched the digitalised marriage records from 1914 to 1970 on the Goa online portal. To access the online documents, citizens will have to log on to the website Goa online.gov.in.

Inaugurating the service, Sawant congratulated the Law Department for successfully commissioning the facility.

Law Minister Nilesh Cabral who was also present at the function said that almost 8.67 lakh pages have been scanned and have been uploaded on the online portal. Marriage records from 1970 till 2019 will also be made online soon, he added.

Cabral informed that around 12,000 marriages have been registered in the State till date as per statistics of the last three years.

Explaining the reason behind delay in the online system Cabral said that the legal dispute with the service providing company which was going on since 2010 has been resolved amicably without adding any financial implications to the State.

“Marriage records scanning work was allotted to Prithvi Service Private Limited in 2010. The work could not be started as the matter was in the court. The matter which was in Court was resolved through intervention and now the actual work has been started”, Cabral said.

However, he admitted that the service is just for provisional marriage certificates and those who needed certified copies, they still will have to visit the office of the registrar.

“The provisional certificate will easily be available and for certified copy the person has to approach the concerned office. A digitally signed certificate will also be soon made available”, informed Cabral.

He claimed that with the efforts of Chief Minister the registration department has now become 99.9 per cent corruption free.
