Goa’s power ministry has decided to stop procuring power from the southern grid, which was a cause of the many interruptions faced in South Goa over the last few days and will instead draw all its centrally allocated power from the western grid.
Power Minister Nilesh Cabral, on Monday said the government has got the green signal from Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (PGCIL) operated National Grid to receive its entire load of 492 mw of power from the western grid.
He said the State consumes 650 mw at peak time in the month of May and accesses the deficit 158 mw by purchasing it from the National Energy Exchange Limited whenever required. Power distribution for the entire State will henceforth be done from the 400kv Colvale sub-station besides the Mahalaxmi and Tilari sub-stations, Cabral said.
The minister also said that
receiving power from the Southern Grid can be thought of again once the new 400kv sub-station currently under construction at Dharbandora is commissioned. He expects it to happen within the next 3-4 years.
Stating that the State through its centrally allocated quota has enough power to meet its needs even at peak load, Cabral however admitted that intra-State transmission and distribution infrastructure is where the department needs the co-operation of the people.
“We can provide whatever is needed but the people should co-operate and allow us to set up the infrastructure in their localities,” Cabral said, referring to stiff opposition from sections of locals faced whenever the department embarks on building infrastructure to improve the local power transmission and distribution lines.
