The South Goa district administration has finally decided to shut down the Covid care centre at the Margao Residency.
Instead, the Margao Residency, located in the heart of the commercial capital, behind the Margao Municipal building, will be utilised to house the doctors and paramedics working in the Covid hospitals.
The district administration had earlier shut down the Colva Residency and the multipurpose indoor stadium, Fatorda as Covid centres. Colva Residency is now being used to accommodate the healthcare workers in the Covid hospital.
Sources in the know informed that the district administration has already issued oral instructions not to admit any more asymptomatic patients in the Margao Residency. Sources said the Margao Residency will be utilised as an accommodation for the healthcare workers after all the patients currently undergoing treatment at the Covid centre are discharged.
Margao Residency was requisitioned by the South Goa district Collector, Ajit Roy when Covid raised its ugly head around March-April. The Residency then was being used as a quarantine centre for the people entering the State from abroad and from other states.
After the change in SOPs, the district administration then designated the Margao Residency as a Covid care centre for the healthcare workers, including doctors, and paramedics from around the State. A portion of the building was later used to accommodate general asymptomatic patients.
Senior officials said that the decision to shut down the Covid care centre has been taken with people opting for home isolation. “The administration still runs Covid care centres at Farmagudi. Even if asymptomatic patients want to undergo treatment in Covid care centres, they can still be accommodated at Farmagudi,” the official said.
Given that the administration has requisitioned private hotels at Colva to house paramedics and MTS workers at great cost, these healthcare workers will be shifted to the Margao Residency, the official added.
