Barely a few days after a well was found contaminated with traces of fuel at Matvem-Dabolim, streams and nullahs in the area have now been found contaminated with fuel traces floating on the surface of water.
The incident had shocked residents who expressed grave concerns with water bodies getting contaminated as fuel traces could endanger lives of humans and marine species in the area.
Local residents of Matvem informed panch member Neelam Naik who later alerted the disaster management authority, the fire services and the officials of Zuari Oil Tanking company who rushed to the site.
The residents said that the entire area was contaminated and that smell of fuel was emanating late Saturday evening.
A resident disclosed that after fuel smell engulfed the area they went to conduct a ground check. “When we decided to check the scene, we were shocked to see the water in the streams and nullahs was contaminated… however, we are fortunate that there was no adverse incident due to this contamination”, the resident said.
The locals later alerted the panch member who in turn informed the concerned authorities. Preventive steps are now being taken, the local said.
