The Penha de Franca panchayat has purchased 70 CCTV cameras and will install them at strategic locations in the village, to keep a vigil on those dumping garbage in open spaces.
Penha de Franca Sarpanch Swapnil Chodankar said even though the panchayat has been collecting garbage on a door-to-door basis, there had been a tendency to throw garbage in open spaces.
“The panchayat is spending several lakhs of rupees to collect garbage to keep the village clean and yet, garbage is seen everywhere.”
“To keep a vigil on those dumping garbage, CCTVs have been purchased through funds received from the 14th Finance Commission. As soon as rains recede, these CCTV cameras will be installed at strategic locations,” said Chodankar.
The sarpanch said the panchayat has also begun the work to clear the drains and nullahs in all wards of the village.
“There were complaints from residents that the drains have been blocked, due to which rainwater was overflowing on the road. They requested the panchayat to clean the drains immediately.”
“However, there was a delay in cleaning the drains on account of manpower shortage during the Covid pandemic. Usually, the panchayat cleans the drains before monsoon, but this time, the work has started and nearly 60% of the work has been completed,” said Chodankar.
Commenting on the library building, Chodankar said the library was shifted to the Nana Nani Park in June 2019.
“The panchayat later submitted a proposal to the government for a new ground-plus-one building for the library under the Din Dayal Upadhaya scheme. This file is pending approval before the Town and Country Planning Department for over a year. It is unclear why this file is not being cleared by the TCP,” said Chodankar.
