General Secretary of the National Union of Seafarers of India (NUSI) Milind Kandalgoankar has said the Union has increased the monetary assistance to the existing widows of seafarers. He also announced that ration will be distributed every month to widows of seafarers who are in a very needy condition.
Speaking at an interactive session with seafarers and their families at the NUSI Maritime Academy, Sucaldem-Chinchinim, the NUSI general secretary further said the holiday home at Khareband will be upgraded so the seafarers and their families will benefit out of it.
“Monetary assistance of Rs 800 per month has been increased to the existing widows. Lots of other benefits are available for seafarers and their families. One can visit NUSI branch office at khareband Margao,” he said, while distributing cheques to seafarers for their medical treatment as a support.
Speaking at the function, President of Goan Seamen Association of India (GSAI) Frank Viegas has said a lot needs to be done for the seafaring community.
He appealed to NUSI to show concern towards lack of jobs in Merchant Navy for freshers who pass out from the institute after completion of training such as Deck Cadets, Trainee Marine Engineers, Trainee Ordinary Seamen, Trainee Wiper and Trainee Cook / Steward. “They should be given opportunities in the shipping companies by making compulsory to recruit trainees on board by bringing to the attention of the concerned authorities. This will ensure that the future is filled with great opportunities and great challenges with your help, we will achieve them and make the coming years the best years for the members of GSAI, NUSI and seafaring community,” Frank said.
He has expressed the hope that leadership of Milind Kandalgaonkar General Secretary cum Treasurer, NUSI will move ahead in the right direction so the seafarers and their families will benefit in large.
