Nuvem constituency is in the cynosure of all eyes ahead of the Congress’s Goy Rakhonn Yatra on Wednesday, with welcome banners put up at public places by both the Congress block and social worker Lyndon Monteiro.
The ground reality on the eve of the yatra is clear: the Congress block, along with district and PCC general secretary Everson Vales, is working on the ground to mobilise party workers and supporters for the rally.
At the same time, banners put up by Monteiro under the banner of ‘Together for Nuvem’ have come up at several locations, welcoming people to the yatra.
What makes Monteiro’s involvement significant is that he has not yet formally joined the Congress, despite repeatedly stating that he intends to contest the 2027 Assembly election on the ticket of a political party.
More importantly, this is the first time Monteiro has publicly made common cause with the Congress by welcoming and mobilising support for one of its programmes.
Monteiro made no secret of the fact that he is mobilising his supporters and workers for Wednesday’s yatra. “The Congress leadership has given me the signal to participate in the yatra. I am mobilising my people. The question of joining the Congress will be decided at a later stage,” he told The Goan.
Another Congress leader from Nuvem, Pausilipo Dourado, is also on the move, mobilising his supporters for the yatra.
Congress leader Everson Vales said the yatra would kick off near Agnel Ashram in Verna before passing through Nuvem and proceeding towards Fatorda. “The Nuvem block committee, district committee members and workers are working for the success of the yatra,” Vales said.
While the yatra will begin at Agnel Ashram, sources said Monteiro and his supporters may join the procession along the route, potentially providing a show of strength and underlining his growing political presence in Nuvem.
The developments have added an interesting political dimension to the yatra, with attention now focused on the extent of Monteiro’s participation and what it could signal ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.
