Reacting to the Supreme Court decision regarding panchayat elections, Panchayats Minister Mauvin Godinho on Wednesday said the State government had given all data regarding OBC to the State Election Commission, which will now be responsible to conduct panchayat elections in the State.

" We had gone for an appeal on which the Supreme court has given its decision. It was Supreme Court who had earlier ordered to use data properly from OBC commission and then conduct elections and we had again approached Supreme Court only to ask for more time and grant us a few more days but the SC has asked to conduct elections within 45 days,” said Godinho.

“We have now taken combined OBC data based on previous census and information already in the domain of OBC commission and handed it over to the SEC, which will take a final decision because there is nothing in the hands of the government now.”

“The court has entrusted all responsibility to the SEC and they will be responsible to conduct elections. At the same time, there are guidelines that there should not be more than 50 percent reservations," said Godinho.

Godinho also paid tributes to Dr Shamaprasad Mukharjee on occasion of his birth anniversary and thereafter participated in a plastic-free awareness drive.
