Officials have agreed to close an accident-prone crossing on the Canacona Bypass at Kolsar-Galgibaga if people do not want the crossing amid growing road mishaps which have claimed two lives so far.
GPCC General Secretary Janardhan Bhandari along with other activists organised a joint inspection with officials from the Mamlatdar’s office, PWD (NH), Police and Traffic, after a 13th mishap was reported at the crossing near Matoshree Hotel Kolsar-Galgibaga.
The activists claimed there is no crossing as shown in the original drawings and deviation from this plan had led to several mishaps, which had claimed two lives on the Canacona four-lane Bypass.
After agreeing with arguments put forth by activists, PWD (NH) Assistant Engineer Rajesh Gaude said: “There is no problem in closing the crossing and restoring the Divider, provided locals demand the same. I request a resolution passed by the Poinguinim Panchayat in this matter and we can initiate moves to close the crossing within a week,” said Gaude.
Meanwhile, it was inadvertently reported in The Goan on Monday that two persons had died in a mishap between a taxi and van at Kolsar on Saturday. The two persons had sustained injuries in the mishap. The accident at Kolsar is the 13th mishap at the site and two lives have been lost in these 13 mishaps.
