Personnel deputed by the Captain of Ports on Monday cut into pieces the sophisticated suction pump which was used in illegal sand mining at Xelvona-Curchorem.
The raid was jointly conducted last Wednesday by the Quepem Mamlatdar, Department of Mines and Geology and Curchorem police at an industrial unit registered as a fishing industry.
While in reality no fishing industry was ever run at the site since the time of its registration, authorities were baffled to notice large scale extraction of sand in the area.
An offence was later registered against company officials for illegal sand mining causing destruction of environment and also for misuse of licence issued for running the fishery unit.
On Monday morning, personnel from Captain of Ports went to Xelvona-Curchorem and cut into pieces the suction pump and other equipment used in illegal sand mining.
