St Cruz MLA Tony Fernandes along with Chimbel PHC Medical Officer Dr Jude D’Souza and a group of residents of Indira Nagar on Monday conducted a site inspection at the locality to identify a site to build a common soak pit.
The inspection comes against the backdrop of notices issued by the Chimbel PHC for disconnection of water supply of households if remedial action is not taken to stop release of sewage water into the drainages, which ultimately finds its way in the river. More than 1,000 households in Indira Nagar have been served such notices.
It may be recalled that The Goan had highlighted that Indira Nagar residents had knocked the doors of St Cruz MLA Tony Fernandes and sought his help in resolving the issue as PWD and health officials had started disconnection of water supply of households releasing sewage in the drainages.
Later, MLA Fernandes along with a delegation met Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and sought an extension of another two months so that common soak pits could be built as compliance to the NGT order.
Speaking to The Goan after the inspection, MLA Fernandes informed that a place has been identified where a common soak pit will be built and sewage from Indira Nagar will be released in it.
“In majority of Indira Nagar, it is practically impossible to build individual soak pits as the houses are touching each other and hence, the only solution is to build a common soak pit,” Fernandes said.
“This is only a temporary solution. As a long term solution, we are going to build a sewage treatment plant for which the process is underway,” Fernandes said.
Chimbel PHC Medical Officer Dr Jude D’Souza stated due to NGT directives, sewage water flowing into the river had to stop.
“We have issued notices for disconnection of water supply to the households but if remedial action is taken to stop of sewage discharge into the river, then we will immediately re-connect the disconnected water supply,” he stated.
