Officials of various departments have been asked to complete works within a time frame, during a joint meeting convened on Tuesday to review monsoon preparedness in the port town.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Mormugao Dy Collector Bhagwant Karmali said the meeting was conducted at the request of Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar.
“Major issues discussed in the meeting pertaining to drainage and trees posing a threat, and necessary directions have been issued to various departments to compete the works within the time frame,” said Karmali.
Salkar said the meeting was convened to discuss and review monsoon preparedness, to avoid any kind of disaster.
"We have sought information from the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) about the major drainages that have been cleared and from WRD about de-silting of various Nullahs. We have already begun trimming branches of trees posing a threat using a crane which was arranged from outside and this crane will be used on a daily basis to clear dangerous trees.”
“We have asked every councillor to prune trees in their own wards as per the list and permission by the forest department. We also have additional labourers to be given to the fire department to handle emergency situations," said Salkar.
The Vasco MLA said anti-larval initiatives have also started and awareness programmes have been carried out in association with the health department.
“We have also constructed major trenches at various locations to prevent flooding in the city. We had closed down a portion of FL Gomes road for work on a ramp but we plan to open it during monsoons because there are chances that Swatantra Path may get waterlogged and vehicles would move at a slow pace.”
“We will try and divert the traffic by opening one lane of F L Gomes road as a temporary measure for two months to clear the blockage and decongest the city during monsoons,” he added.
Salkar said the dy collector has also created a WhatsApp group with him and heads of all government departments, for better coordination in case of any emergency situations.
“As far as power fluctuations are concerned, we have asked the electricity department to take measures or provide us the list of transformers that need to be upgraded or old conductors that need to be replaced," said Salkar.
