Even as the public hearing on solid waste management facility at Bainguinim is three weeks away, some of the residents are busy collecting information on environment, heritage, biodiversity, and various other aspects pertaining to the area so that they are able to convince the government to halt their plans of setting up a waste plant there.
On Sunday, a group of individuals led by NIO scientist Dr Arvind Saran visited the Bainguinim waste plant site to record and collect all the information so that they could present a strong case in opposing the plant.
Dr Saran was armed with a GPS tracker and he was accompanied by Mariano Ferrao of Musical Warriors and Goa for Goans, William Rodrigues of St Estevam and Old Goa locals Glen Cabral and Glen Almeida.
Speaking to The Goan, Dr Saran informed that the purpose of the visit was to collect information in terms of the factual position of the site as of now, before anything comes up, apart from the project report which is submitted to GSPCB regarding the plant.
“This plant is adjoining to so many constructions and residential apartments which were not listed in the report. So we wanted to have a ground reality,” he stated.
“We had to gather the latitude, longitude positional information on hard facts, which we have got. We also saw that this area is home to peacocks, birds, different animals which need to be preserved,” Dr Saran said while stating apart from that there are umpteen natural pits and many abandoned quarries with thick vegetation.
“There are water bodies submerged. There is ground water but no report has been prepared regarding the charge and discharge of groundwater table which is below the laterite bed,” Dr Saran pointed out.
