MARGAO
Panchayat Minister Mauvin Godinho on Saturday said that the government was very much open to postponing the ensuing Zilla Panchayat polls by a couple of days if the date fixed by the government clashes with the ISL football finals.
Mauvin, however, hastened to that the government will act only in the event a written representation comes from the relevant quarters and authorities that the ZP polls will clash with the ISL finals.
“The government cannot act on mere hearsay. Many called me up in the last two days to find out whether the ensuing ZP polls will be rescheduled because of the ISL finals. I have no knowledge whether the ISL finals are slated on the date of ZP polls or the eve of the polls. Let some authority approach the government in writing that the ISL finals are scheduled on a particular day”, Mauvin said, adding that the government will not mind adjusting the ZP election by a few days.
The Panchayat Minister, however, pointed out that the March 15 ZP polls stands as per the schedule announced by the government.
Rumours were afloat in political circles on the fate of the March 15 ZP polls as it was reported in certain quarters that the ISL finals may be held in Goa on March 14 on the eve of the polls. This had raised questions on the availability of the police for security duties for the finals as well as the election work as they are required to accompany the polling staff to the booths.
