Deputy Chief Minister Chandrakant Kavlekar on Saturday said the government is serious in commissioning the long-delayed South Goa district hospital and affirmed it has made a budgetary provision for the project in the budget estimates for the coming financial year.

Kavlekar was addressing the Silver Jubilee programme of the Hospicio Health Services Emplo yees Cooperative Credit Society at the Ravindra Bhavan, Margao, on Saturday.

“The government is committed to commissioning the South Goa district hospital at the earliest. Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has made a budgetary outlay for the health sector in the budget estimates, which will also take care of commissioning of the district hospital,” he said.

The Deputy CM tried to reassure the Hospicio employees that the government is aware of the ground reality, adding that the Sawant government will not make any compromises on the two sectors of health and education.

“The new district hospital will be commissioned after completing the balance work,” he said, while complimenting the Hospicio Health Services Employees Co-operative Credit Society for completing 25 glorious years in serving the society.

Addressing the gathering, Leader of the Opposition Digambar Kamat said Hospicio has a rich history not only in the health sector, but had many properties spread across the state.

“No one knows the status of the Hospicio properties. At one time, Hospicio had shares in many companies, including the Karachi Electric Company. The auditor general is presently on the job to find out the status of the properties and other assets owned by Hospicio,” Kamat said.

Complimenting the management of Hospicio society for rendering yeoman services to the society, Kamat underlined the need to protect the cooperative sector in the interest of the common man.

Hospicio medical superintendent Dr Ira Almeida also spoke.
