CANACONA
A two-metre-long dead dolphin was found washed ashore on Rajbhag-Tarir beach.
According to residents, the dolphin carcass, which was partly decomposed, was without its tail. The forest department is investigating the cause of its death. Padi Range Deputy Range Forest Officer Devidas Velip who conducted the panchanama stated at present there is no cause or reason for the death of the mammal.
“A postmortem is also conducted with the help of veterinarians from the Animal Husbandry and the report is awaited to find out the cause of the death,” he said.
Though the physical panchanama could not throw any light, it is suspected that the dolphin may have been attacked by a larger mammal/sea-species particularly a whale as its tail is missing.
It may be known that several people operate boats taking tourists and visitors for dolphin trips which is common on Canacona’s beaches of Khola, Agonda, Palolem, Galgibaga and Polem.
Several dozens of fibre boats are operated for dolphin trips where the tourists are taken beyond the huge sea rocks where diving dolphins are sighted.
