MARGAO: Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao on Thursday urged the student community to know the very fact of how people of all faiths participated in the liberation struggle and how they succeeded in preserving communal harmony, stressing on the need to preserve the communal amity and brotherhood amongst people intact.

He was speaking during the sports day program of St. Francis Xavier High School in Bhatpal-Canacona. Gasparbab Coutinho, Shristhal Panch Ramu Naik, Kishorbab Bandekar, Shubham Komarpant, (Councillor, Canacona Municipal Council), St. Francis Xavier High School Manager Fr. Freddy Lobo, School Headmaster Aleluia Pereira, PTA Chairperson Clarita Fernandes and others were present.

“I appeal to you to learn about the significant role people of all faiths played in Goa's liberation struggle. They collectively succeeded in preserving communal harmony, and hence we all need to continue upholding this harmony,” Alemao said.

“You should know about all the communities. Be it Hindus, Christians, Muslims, who participated in the liberation struggle of Goa. It was the unity and combined struggle of all people; all communities, all sections from Canacona to Pernem and Sanguem to Vasco that finally led to our liberation from colonial rule”, he said.

He added: “Now a day, the uniqueness of Goa and Goans is under attack. The seeds of religious discord and hatred are being planted in Goa, amongst Goans. We need to be vigilant and should not fall prey to these tactics of divisive attacks. If we lose our brotherhood and harmony, we lose our ‘goenkarponn. Hence let us preserve it with unity”.

Making an appeal to the student community to actively take part in sports activities, Yuri said “Sports is a large area, where we can make our career at national and international level. But for that we need to have interest and commitment to achieve our goal”.
