Oppn slams govt’s Axis Bank mandate to schools

MARGAO

Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao has said the circular issued by the Education Department to schools and institutions directing them to open bank accounts in Axis Bank is direct evidence of the BJP government’s agenda of promoting private banks and eventually finishing nationalised banks.

CM Pramod Sawant must withdraw the circular immediately, demanded Yuri.

Reacting to the circular issued by the Education Department directing schools and educational institutions to open bank accounts only in Axis Bank, the Leader of Opposition said that the circular is to facilitate the marketing target of the wife of a BJP leader associated with Axis Bank.

He said the Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant must explain why the government has selectively chosen only Axis Bank. “What is the difficulty in allowing schools and institutions to have bank accounts of their choice? Who will take responsibility if the private banks go bankrupt someday? Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant needs to answer these important questions,” Yuri further questioned.

He added: “All banks, especially nationalised banks, have online transaction facilities. ‘Mukhyamantri Guru Dakshina Yojana’ can be implemented through any of these banks. It is only because of the vested interest of the BJP leader’s wife that the government is pressurising schools and institutions to open bank accounts in Axis Bank.”

He warned the Director of Education not to come under pressure from the government and issue circulars promoting private sector banks. “He will be responsible if some fraud takes place in the banks. The choice of selecting bank accounts should be left to the respective schools and institutions,” Yuri stated.
