More than half of assistant motor vehicles inspectors (AMVIs) hired by the Goa government in the last decade are under investigation for recruitment time fraud including misrepresentation of facts, Transport Minister Mauvin Godinho revealed in the Goa legislative assembly.
Forty-seven AMVIs were recruited by the Goa government to serve under the Regional Transport Office (RTO) in two batches of 38 in the period between 2007 and 2012 and nine in the five years between 2012 and 2017.
Two of them -- Oden Champ Da Costa and Vassudev N Sawant -- have since been dismissed from service on April 19, 2012 and April 2, 2013 respectively, both for "producing forged documents" to secure the AMVI posts, Godinho said in a reply to a query posed by former chief minister and Congress Ponda MLA, Ravi Naik.
Of the balance 45 AMVIs recruited between 2007 and 2017, as many as 26 are under cloud for similar fraud or misrepresentation of facts for securing recruitment.
"Inquiry is being conducted against 26 assistant motor vehicle inspectors to ascertain the charge of misrepresentation of facts," Godinho said in response to a supplementary posed by Naik.
The inquiries against these AMVIs center around whether they have produced fake certificates to secure employment at the time of their recruitment process.
The RTO is perceived to be among the most corrupt of departments in the State administration and technical positions in it much sought after for several decades.
