The ten day drive, which began on World Environment Day enabled corporate entities as well as citizens of Goa the opportunity to dispose their e-waste in a safe and environment friendly manner. A total of 1,177 kilograms of e-waste was collected during the ten-day drive.
“We wanted to create a positive impact on the society we live in. Since e-waste is a rising concern in today’s digital era, we organised a city-wide e-waste collection drive so that the people of Goa can dispose their electronic waste in a safe and environmentally friendly manner,” Nalini Elvino de Sousa, Manager, Communicare Trust. The drive was launched in partnership with NASSCOM Foundation.
The e-waste was collected from five collection points set up in Panaji. These collection points included Goa Handicrafts Emporia at KTC Panaji, Goa Handicrafts Complex Mala, Goa Handicrafts Outlet at Udyog Bhavan opposite Menezes Braganza Hall, CCP Animal shelter at St. Ines and the Extension wing of Government Polytechnic at Altinho Panaji.
The litter collected was then segregated into cartridges, light bulbs, printers, fridges, televisions and electronic appliances, post segregation the e-waste was transported to Bangalore where it was processed in an appropriate and safe manner.
Communicare Trust had organized a host of activities to create awareness including an awareness workshop for various consumer groups and forums at EDC Complex Panjim, an interaction with electronic and electrical dealers in and around Panjim to sensitize them to the e-waste rules of 2016 and explain the roles and responsibilities has been planned in collaboration with CCP. Additionally, workshops will be held at Govt Polytechnic in Altinho and Goa University.
