A routine visa-overstay case against a Ugandan national led Goa police to discover that she was wanted in Karnataka in an alleged prostitution racket after the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO-Goa) traced a non-bailable warrant against her through the national criminal justice tracking system.
The woman was living in Mandrem after allegedly jumping bail in a Bengaluru case in which she was booked under the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act, besides overstaying.
Officials told The Goan that she was detained after she was found without valid travel documents. The foreigner was subsequently convicted by a local court for overstaying her visa and lodged at the Detention Centre in June.
It was during the FRRO’s verification of her antecedents that the Karnataka case came to light.
“Using the national digital platform that connects the police, courts, prisons, prosecution and forensic agencies, the Goa FRRO found that she was booked for two offences at Hennur Police Station in Karnataka. Moreover, a non-bailable warrant was issued against her,” an official said.
In that case, she was granted bail but allegedly failed to appear during trial, following which the warrant was issued. “She was believed to have escaped Karnataka to stay in Goa. “Her presence here came to light during a verification drive at a hotel,” the official said.
Following communication from FRRO, a team from Hennur police arrived in Goa and took custody of the woman on Tuesday.
Kenyan national detained
over visa overstay
In a separate case, the Goa FRRO has lodged a 42-year-old Kenyan national at the Detention Centre after finding that she had remained in Goa beyond the validity of her tourist visa.
Sources said the woman arrived in Goa in November last year on a tourist visa but continued to stay in India after its expiry. She was traced by the FRRO and handed over to Anjuna police for necessary action before being lodged at the Detention Centre.
She, however, has a valid passport, and officials stated that the FRRO has now initiated deportation proceedings against her.
