CANACONA
Nima Tamang, who was arrested in connection with the murder of a co-worker at a Palolem restaurant, has been remanded to five days in police custody, even as police believe that robbery was the prime motive for the crime.
Police sources said the accused, who had recently joined the restaurant as a waiter had no cash with him, but had noticed that his senior co-worker Ranjit Singh, had a good amount of cash in his possession.
After the restaurant closed on Monday night and all the staff had retired to their respective beds for the night, the accused is alleged to have stolen cash from Singh.
Singh, however, woke up and tried to catch hold of Tamang in a bid to stop him from fleeing with his cash.
In a scuffle, the accused is alleged to have struck the victim with a wooden plank and then fled with the cash of Rs 12,000 and mobile phone of the victim.
Singh, who was writhing in pain and in a pool of blood, raised an alarm and alerted staff who were asleep nearby.
Meanwhile, an autopsy on the body of Ranjit Singh confirmed that he had died after being hit on the head with an object.
Canacona police said Tamang was sent for a medical examination at GMC hospital and was later produced before the JMFC at Canacona.
