PANAJI
Panaji's iconic Church Square is set for a major facelift, with the Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) going ahead and inviting consultancy bids for a heritage-sensitive beautification project estimated at Rs 5 crore, including GST.
The project aims to enhance one of the capital's most recognisable public spaces while preserving its historic character and heritage significance.
According to the bid document, the proposed makeover will feature shaded seating areas, accessible pathways and heritage-compatible paving.
Public art installations, drinking water fountains and smart poles equipped with lighting, CCTV surveillance and Wi-Fi connectivity are also part of the proposal.
The redevelopment will prioritise pedestrians and improve accessibility for all users with designated parking spaces, better traffic circulation and infrastructure for cultural and community events. The project's bidding document also emphasises the need to retain the square's unique identity through the use of Goan architectural aesthetics and context-sensitive design. The consultant selected through the bidding process will be responsible for preparing detailed designs, cost estimates and a comprehensive project report. The assignment also includes securing technical sanctions and providing technical supervision during execution.
Church Square, located near the historic Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Church, remains one of Panaji's most frequented landmarks and a key venue for social and cultural activities.
