Panaji market death: Accused driver gets bail

PANAJI

A local court at Merces on Tuesday granted conditional bail to Shahid Ansari of Taleigao, who has been charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder in the death of a pedestrian at the Panaji market on December 2.

The victim, identified as 50-year-old Mukut Joshi Bora from Assam, died a day after he was hit twice by a car that was reversing onto a footpath near the market at around 7.45 am.

Police said the car was driven by Ansari, who was allegedly under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident and was later arrested.

CCTV footage of the incident, which went viral, showed the car first crashing into parked two-wheelers before hitting the pedestrian twice. The impact pinned Bora between the vehicle and a shop shutter, leaving him critically injured. He succumbed to his injuries the next day.
