Panaji police question Uzwaad secretary over Azad Maidan protest

July 20 protest had police consent, we’ll continue to cooperate: Lawyer

PANAJI

Panaji police questioned Uzwaad NGO Secretary Amreen Shaikh for nearly two hours on Wednesday afternoon in connection with a protest held by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) at Azad Maidan on July 20.

Shaikh, who was also questioned by Mapusa police on Sunday evening over another protest held in the town, appeared before the Panaji police after receiving a call letter from Police Sub-Inspector Manjunath Naik. She was accompanied by her lawyer Malisa Simoes.

Panaji police had registered an FIR after Tiswadi Joint Mamlatdar-III filed a complaint stating that the Azad Maidan gathering of around 1,000 ‘unidentified persons’ was unlawful as no permission had been granted for the protest.

Details of Shaikh’s questioning were not immediately available. However, Simoes later told the media that the organisation had obtained written consent from the police for the July 20 protest and the same was submitted to the police on Wednesday.

Simoes said the recent Supreme Court judgement delivered on Tuesday regarding police action and cases filed during the CJP movement was also submitted.

“The inquiry has concluded and Uzvadd will continue to cooperate further if required,” Simoes said.
