PANAJI
Despite being considered one of the most developed cities in the country, lack of employment opportunities for the youth continues to remain the main issue in Panaji.
The Goan Everyday spoke to ten electors in different age groups who expressed that employment is a major issue that should be tackled by the new MLA of Panaji. They also pointed out that basic infrastructure like water supply, internal roads and drainage system has to be put in place.
"I have come down from Bangalore for Ganesh Chaturthi. As the elections were scheduled around this time, I got an opportunity to vote. But it is high time that qualified youth get the best of opportunities in the State itself so that they do not have to leave their families and go outside the State," stated a youth in his thirties who left the State four years back in search of better employment opportunities.
Another Panaji voter was of the opinion that the government should strive hard to get multinational companies into the State to prevent brain drain.
"Youth today do not want to remain in the State as they are highly paid by MNCs outside the State. For the State to grow, we should try to give these youth the best of employment opportunities so that they prefer to remain in the State itself," said an elderly mother.
However, lashing out at the various political parties in the State, a senior citizen said that the issue of casinos has been hyped so much that the main issues plaguing the city remain neglected.
"What are casinos? Don't the political parties have other issues to discuss? Panaji needs urgent attention as far as its waste management and traffic problems are concerned. Nobody is looking at these," he lambasted.
