Minor clashes between supporters of Bharatiya Janata Party and Congress were reported near the polling station at Dhavshire-Usgao on Wednesday afternoon, even as voting to the Valpoi by-election in Usgao area was by and large peaceful.
Police were summoned to the site to avoid untoward incident. The police camped in the area to maintain law and order. As many as 8,205 out of 10,635 voters exercised
their franchise from Usgao-Ganjem area.
According to sources, the Congress workers suspected that rival party supporters were distributing ‘coupons' to the voters, to which they objected. A BJP leader rushed to the site on learning about the incident.
DySP Sunita Sawant, who was monitoring the situation in Usgao, also rushed to the site and camped in the area.
According to Congress supporters, one Usgao-Ganje panch was distributing ‘coupons' to the voters.
"He fled from the spot when the Congress supporters raised objection and at the very same time,
a BJP leader also reached the spot," said a Congress supporter.
The video of the incident went viral, where the Congress supporters are seen confronting the BJP leader and his supporters.
When The Goan interacted with some voters, they expressed unhappiness with Rane's resignation as
the MLA, which forced a by-election.
"Politicians are taking us for granted. They are wasting tax payers' money by such acts (of resigning)," said a voter.
Both parties have been trying their best to garner votes from Usgao-Ganjem area, which has a huge number of voters in Valpoi constituency.
